What a static website actually is

A static website is built from plain HTML and CSS files (with the occasional bit of JavaScript for interactive elements). When someone visits a page on a static site, the server hands over the exact file that was written; no database is queried, no application code runs, no admin panel exists. This is how the web worked in its first decade before content management systems became dominant. The old approach turned out to have significant advantages that modern static site tooling has made easier to access.

Why hand-coded beats site generators (Hugo, Jekyll, Astro)

Static site generators like Hugo, Jekyll, 11ty, and Astro are tools for developers to author static sites more efficiently. They are excellent tools. For a small business site we build for you, they add complexity you never see and never benefit from: you cannot open the source files without also installing the framework, understanding the templating language, and running a build step. If we hand you plain HTML and CSS instead, you (or any competent developer, ever) can open the files in any text editor and understand what is happening.

We use static site generators internally when they save us build time, but we compile down to plain HTML/CSS for delivery. What you receive is portable, human-readable, and requires no toolchain to open or modify.

Hosting a static site

This is where static sites are dramatically cheaper than dynamic. Options:

• Netlify (free tier): covers most small business sites at £0/month. Includes automatic HTTPS, global CDN, form handling, and preview URLs on every change. Free tier caps at 100GB/month bandwidth.
• Cloudflare Pages (free tier): similar to Netlify. Unlimited bandwidth on free tier. Slightly more technical to set up but excellent value.
• GitHub Pages (free): if your site is version-controlled, hosting is free directly from the repo. Good for portfolios and small business sites.
• Traditional shared hosting (Hostinger, SiteGround): £3-8/month. Handles static sites easily, gives you familiar cPanel access, works well if you already have hosting.
• S3 + CloudFront (AWS): for high-traffic sites. Typically £5-20/month depending on traffic. More technical setup.

What is a static website?

Can I update it myself without editing code?

By default no. That is a feature, not a bug. If self-editing matters we can add a lightweight CMS layer (Netlify CMS, Statamic) or a small custom admin for specific editable regions. Or add a Care Plan and we handle updates.

How much does a static website cost?

How much does hosting cost?

Can a static website have a contact form or newsletter signup?

Yes. Contact forms via Formspree, Basin, or Netlify Forms. Newsletter signups direct to Mailchimp, ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign, etc. Standard on all our static sites.

When a static site is not the right fit

Static is not the right choice if:

• You publish content weekly or daily. Blog-heavy sites are better on WordPress or a headless CMS.
• You need e-commerce. A dozen products can work static-with-Stripe. Hundreds cannot without heavy customisation. Use Shopify or WooCommerce.
• You need user accounts, memberships, or logged-in experiences. Requires dynamic backend.
• Non-technical staff need to edit everything themselves. The static advantage (no admin panel) becomes a disadvantage.
